Fake followers

It’s so frustrating to see that I have all of these new followers just to discover that they don’t actually have a webpage, they are selling viagra, they are real estate agents, they are selling weight loss products, they are selling work out equipment, the are selling lawn mowers. This is a blog where I put my heart and soul and life out there for a dating site to then follow me? What do they think I will follow them back?

I take all my followers seriously. I pick a blog every day and read and read and read just like it’s a novel. I catch up on all I have missed and even go back further on their blog to see old posts that may have been forgotten about but actually really mean something to the writer. I taking blogging very seriously and those who follow me I give my utmost respect.

What a disservice and disappointment it is to spend my time looking into new followers only to find they are fake! Waste of precious time.

For all those that are real out there in the blogging world, I appreciate your support and I appreciate your willingness to put yourself out there with some of the hard topics we talk about. I do truly appreciate my REAL followers as I consider you friends.

  2. There are days I feel not so real and other days I feel more real than I want to be. Lol…
The Velveteen Rabbit came to mind reading about ‘real.’

I know what you mean though. I’ve gotten a few of those. Not as many it sounds like but that’s probably because I don’t post consistently like you do. It is weird that they would use wordpress at all to spam but especially irrelevant (to them) blogs is even weirder.

    • The ones that really upset me already have been removed by wordpress thank heavens because I was at a loss how to get rid of them and really upset about it this morning. But thankfully they are gone!!!
I love velveteen rabbit. When I was getting my early childhood development degree I did an entire study on that book. Wrote my final paper on it infact.

      • Oh wow. I would LOVE to read your paper on The Velveteen Rabbit. I still have my copy from childhood. (I think) it’s in a box in the garage somewhere.

        To remove a follower:
Well first to see your list of followers,
-Click on “My site” up on the top left.

-In that left column, go down to “People” and click on that.

-Then over on the right, you should see a column. One of them should say “Followers.”

-Click on that and there’s your list.

-To the right of each one there is a red ‘Remove’.

      • I wish I knew where it was. I was just looking at my different certificates I have in a folder of my degrees and my graduation stuff. What’s so funny is I never graduated in 1992 when I was supposed to. I was missing one class. A few years back I called the school and asked what class I needed to actually graduate. They lady was so nice she substituted one elective i took for the class required and sent me my graduation 20 years later! I thought it was was the funniest thing ever!!!
Thanks for the help on wp followers

      • Well congratulations! That was cool that the lady did that. Why not right? I have no doubt that paper you wrote is good. I would be so interested to see what you did with the book.

I know you said WP removed those fake followers but when you mentioned you were at a loss how to get rid of them, I wanted to find out how to do it too. Reference if there’s a next time. 🙂

      • Oh yeah. I’m glad you did becasue they only got rid of the dating ones not the others so I can do that now. Thank you.
I so wish I could find my paper on the velveteen rabbit. It was always my favorite book which is why i wrote the paper onit. It was so profoundly touching on what was considered “real”

  3. I didn’t know they were even out there! 😧 I’d be disappointed too, being a blogging takes a lot of my time and energy and to know there are people that don’t take it as serious as others is saddening. Good thing to put out there!

  4. Sorry to hear. Nothing like that has happened to me – yet. If it does, I will be just as upset about it as you. I am grateful for those who take the time to follow me and read my blog post. I cherish our community of survivors who are here to empathize, understand, support, encourage and share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

  5. Real here. 🙂
You can remove unreal followers by following the next procedure:
    – press My Site in the upper left corner
    – in the next screen press ‘Followers’ in the upper right corner
    – this will show you a list with followers and a trash can. Pressing the remove button and then answering the pop-up will remove the follower. They can however follow you again the same day if they like. I have one of those. Deleted him over 30 times by now. He doesn’t really get it I believe. :-/

      • Yay! I worked out yesterday that there is another step too: to block replyers.
        – Click on ‘My Site’ in the top left corner.
        – Select ‘Comments’
        – In the comments look for the not-nice user
        – Select ‘User info’ in the top right corner of the comment box
        – Press ‘Block User’.
Not sure if this block is on e-mail level or IP address level. Hope this is of help.

  6. We all get those fake followers. They follow as many blogs as possible and click likes without reading so that people see their address. They hope some will follow their avatars back to their site so they can sell them something. They don’t normally do it too often, if they don’t get return traffic from the site. What bothers me far more is the fake followers that somehow only follow with an email address. WordPress gets rid of them with in days, but they come in rashes. Other wordpress blogs have complained of it also. No one seems to know what the game is with them, and the email address make no sense. Be well. Hugs

    • I know you’re real. I read your blog 🙂 to look through each one like i did today and find hundreds that aren’t even real was disappointing but telling becasue only a handful comment . I don’t mind if no one comments becasue i read a lot and don’t always comment but i don’t like someone following my blog just to get followed back when they are selling cars or something completely unrelated to why I blog

      • I get that, it’s weirdly creepy. There’s a guy on instagram who keeps asking to follow me and all his profile says is that he’s single, divorced and – get this – a drilling engineer. Um…is it just my mind in the gutter there? I’ve declined him twice and he came back. People are fucked.

      • I block all the fuckers. Especially on IG it is so easy. With WP it is a little harder. But poof gone on IG. It’s where I post all my photos. Enough creeps in the world I don’t want them on my social media.

      • Go to their name on instagram and there are three dots click on those and should be the option to block. I block everyone who requests to follow me if i look at their account and see they have NO business following me. Try that and let me know if it works. I will check real quick to make sure that that is right

  7. I thought they had a system of getting rid of those. I hope they haven’t stopped. I just looked and it’s called Alismet and it told me that…Akismet has protected your site from 1,401 spam comments already. But now tha I thik about it, I guess they let some markety ones in, too. I don’t visit them, tho, and you can always undo them…

    • Yes true. It says the same for me but I think that must be comments because the followers still come and they are just marketing something. I just ignore it and some of them get removed by wordpress. But that day i had an influx of them

  8. I came across some, too, very recently. And yeah, quite disappointing. Anyhow, I’m real and it’s my pleasure reading your posts. I try to read as much as I could. 🙂 Happy Sunday! 🙂

  9. Oh yeah I’ve received some of those too. I don’t really take much notice of it though, as I know those who take the time to actually read my posts and comment are who really matters. But I do get where you’re coming from, it annoys me when I see a new one pop up that so obviously just wants a follow back.
